President Obama and the First Lady launched “United We Serve” last month, a 12-week summer of service initiative whose goal is to engage all Americans in service projects, so that we may all be a part of the solution to our country’s most pressing challenges.

Last week, the issues of hunger, homelessness and poverty were themes during an emphasis on “Community Renewal.” (This week, attention turns to another important issue: education). In the midst of a prolonged economic recession that began with a foreclosure and credit crisis and as local governments make difficult choices as a result of tightening municipal budgets; the need for renewing our communities could never be clearer. At the same time, there is a resounding belief that government cannot fix these problems alone and that citizens must come together, to take ownership of our communities again, working together to improve and renew them.

We believe that the power of online social media, including technology that is still evolving, can make it even easier to serve and, moreover, can enhance and extend the service experience.

Chris Golden and Nick Troiano

Chris Golden is a third year student at American University where he is pursuing an interdisciplinary degree in the School of Public Affairs. Golden is from Coventry, Connecticut where he worked as a journalist for Reminder Community Newspapers. He is a 2007 graduate of Pomfret School, where from 2005-2007 he hosted and produced Newstalk, a weekly community news magazine on the school’s WBVC-FM frequency. Golden is a former Congressional intern in the Office of Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT).

In May 2008, Golden spoke at the dedication ceremony of the Connecticut Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the completion of a project that he had been involved with since a fifth grade student in 2000. He is now working with the Memorial Committee to develop an educational curriculum and other yearly programs to expand outreach and awareness of the project.

Through the 2008 election season, Golden maintained a regular weblog, The Golden Report, providing analysis each day leading up to the November election. On Election Night, he co-hosted a live seven-hour webcast from Washington, DC providing results, analysis and featuring callers from around the country. Following the election, he joined the youth civic engagement organization Mobilize.org as Communications Officer, helping to plan the January 2009 Constitutional Convention: Building Democracy 2.0 at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

Nick Troiano is a junior at Georgetown University, hailing from Milford, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Delaware Valley High School as Student Council President in 2007. On campus, Troiano was elected as a Vice Speaker in the Student Government and is active member of ServeNext. Troiano currently serves on the Pennsylvania Youth Advisory Council to the United States Public Service Academy. He is employed by the National Park Service in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

From 2006 to 2007, Troiano worked on a bipartisan political reform movement named Unity08, which aimed to hold the nation’s first online nominating convention for a presidential ticket composed of one Republican and one Democrat.

In 2007, Troiano founded the Pike County Youth Coalition, a youth advocacy non-profit organization that seeks to engage young people in public policy and community service, while also being a resource for the youth community within Pike County, Pennsylvania.

In February 2008, he joined with Mobilize.org as an intern and was later hired as its New Media Coordinator. Through Mobilize, Troiano had the opportunity to participate in research related to the Millennial Generation and civic engagement, particularly around the 2008 election.
