13 of the Best Animal Welfare Resources on the Web

by Stephanie Feldstein · 2009-11-23 01:24:00 UTC

Here is a baker's dozen, in no particular order, of some the best animal welfare resources on the web. I chose to highlight sites on specific topics, rather than feature the nonprofit organizations we all know and love, to give you the resources to get deeper into these issues.

An incredible amount of information waits only a few clicks away. This is a small, but invaluable, sampling of what's out there. Hopefully these will help you take the next step from wherever you are in your personal efforts to make a difference for animals, whether it's changing your habits, educating your neighbors, or getting involved in local politics.

Animal Cruelty:

Animal Adoption:

  • Check out Petfinder for adoptable animals in your area, plus tons of information and resources for pet owners and potential adopters.

Pet Overpopulation and Owner Assistance:

  • Learn the who, what, where, why, and how of spaying and neutering.
  • When vet bills add up quickly, financial aid can be the difference between an animal losing its home or getting any care at all.

Breed Specific Legislation:

Compassionate Shopping:

Vegetarian/Vegan Resources:

  • The Vegetarian Resource Group covers everything from veganism for diabetics to the environmental impacts of food choices, plus a game to see if you're a Grandmaster of Vegetarianism!
  • GoVeg.com offers a starter kit and lots of information on the cruel reality of factory farming and how to take action.

The internet is a big place, and I know there are many worthy sites not listed, so I hope you'll share your own favorites in the comments section!
