25 Restaurants to Celebrate Meatout

Happy Meatout! Since it is the 25th anniversary of the Great American Meatout, I've made a list of  25 restaurants with stellar vegetarian and vegan options. I have eaten at most of these establishments, mixed in with a few recommended by friends.

1. Angelica's Kitchen, NYC. Love this place. The cookbook is also phenomenal.

2. Candle79, NYC. This week's New York Times "A Night Out With..." featured Candle79 (and Alicia Silverstone!)

3. Bliss, Brooklyn, NY. A vegan hot spot. It doesn't get hipper than this place.

4. Baby Cakes, NYC and L.A. Vegan cupcakes make the world go round.

5.  Herbivore, San Francisco, CA. This place turned my friend from a vegetarian to a vegan. It's that good.

6. Follow Your Heart Market and Cafe, Los Angeles, CA. One of the oldest veg restaurants. Makers of Vegenaise!

7. Crossroads Cafe and Tavern, Joshua Tree, CA. Not entirely veg, but the best vegan reuben I've ever had.

8. Hillside Quickies, Seattle, WA. I have plans to move to Seattle just so I can eat at this vegan sandwich shop everyday.

9. The Red Lentil, Watertown, MA. Best vegan Sunday brunch ever.

10. Peace O' Pie, Allston, MA. All vegan pizza place, Woohoo!

11.  Red Avocado, Iowa City, IA. A gem in corn country.

12. Little Anthony's Pizza, Albany, NY. Not all veg, but serves yummy vegan pizza.

13. Sticky Fingers Bakery, Washington, D.C. More vegan cupcakes to keep the world turning.

14. Sage's Cafe, Salt Lake City, UT. All vegan. Best Vegetarian in Utah 8 years in a row.

15. Chicago Diner, Chicago, IL. Meat free since '83!

16. Green Zebra, Chicago, IL. Contemporary vegetarian food.

17. MaggieMudd, San Francisco, CA. Where I first tried coconut milk ice cream. And I never looked back.

18. Red Velvet Cafe, Las Vegas, NV. Vegan Red Velvet cake? A dream come true. Also serves dinner and lunch.

19. Bay Leaf, Portland, OR. Awesome restaurant in an awesome veg-friendly city.

20. Beets Cafe, Austin, TX. All raw vegan food.

21. Evolution Fast Food, San Diego, CA. Drive-through vegetarian restaurant.

22. Green Elephant, Portland, ME. All vegetarian — with vegan options — Asian-influenced cuisine.

23. Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant, Boulder, CO. All vegetarian, with an eco-friendly wine list.

24. Firestorm Cafe and Bookstore, Asheville, NC. All vegan cafe and bookstore! Heaven!

25. Dragonfly, Columbus, OH. An extremely sophisticated veg dining experience.
