A Few Votes in Vermont Could Make the Difference
The Vermont State Senate just voted to override the veto of VT Governor Jim Doulgas on marriage equality legislation. The Governor, despite the overwhelming approval of the legislation from the State House and State Senate - and the poll numbers of the general public which support marriage equality in Vermont - decided to veto the bill, thus cementing his legacy as a civil rights roadblock.
The debate now moves to the House, which could vote on overriding the veto as early as this afternoon. If the Vermont House votes to override the veto, then Vermont will become the fourth state in the nation to recognize marriage equality - and the second state in four days to do so, behind Iowa.
