A Million Man March to Kill the Gays

Martin SsempaUgandan preacher Martin Ssempa, who was once called "my brother" by Pastor Rick Warren's wife Kay, is planning a million man march in Uganda to advocate killing gay people. The march, planned for February 17, is aimed to send a worldwide message that Africans are uniting against sodomy.

Or it could be seen as a desperate attempt to hang on to Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which after facing worldwide condemnation, is starting to lose momentum faster than a sagging balloon, at least among Uganda's executive branch. (One can hope, at least. The pressure still needs to be put on Ugandan officials.) Either way, whether Ssempa's march is a call to arms or a desperate attempt to gain publicity, calling for a million man march in support of slaughtering or imprisoning gays is damned scary.

Especially when last year, Ssempa led a set of protests through the streets of Uganda with folks sporting signs saying, "Arrest all homos." That march, coupled with aggressive support from the American evangelical community, is what led to the current bill before Uganda's parliament that would institute the death penalty for some LGBT folks, and jail terms for many more.

Ah, good old-fashioned religious right kindness. And this is the man that Kay Warren says is her brother, and a man that she says she "loves," while tears stream down her face?
