A New 'Inconvenient Truth' About Bees

I'm sure you've heard that we've got trouble with our honey bees. The mysterious Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has been ravaging hives around the world since 2006, when some beekeepers suddenly began losing 30 to 90 percent of their hives for no discernible reason. Considering that we need pollinators, particularly bees, to grow our food, their decline is a major concern.

A new documentary, "Vanishing of the Bees," follows two commercial beekeepers as they try to keep their hives safe and fulfill their pollination contracts in the face of this ominous threat. The film opened with a successful run in the U.K. and will premiere in the U.S. in several months. After its England premier, Filmstar reviewed it as "the most important documentary film since An Inconvenient Truth."

On February 4, Bee Native, The Honeybee Conservancy and the Natural Resources Defense Council will hold a fundraiser for the film, which, according to a press release, "comprehensively demystifies the collapse of honeybee populations across the planet and its risk to $15 billion dollars' worth of U.S. agricultural revenue products."

If you're in New York, take note: the fundraiser will be held at RAMSCALE, located at 463 West Street, 13th floor, from 7:00-10:00 pm, and will include previews of the documentary, a Q&A session with the directors and a silent auction. You can purchase tickets here.
