You may know Michelle Rodriguez for her role as Trudy in Avatar, or as Ana Lucia on the hit series Lost, or for one of her many other "tough-chick roles" (as imdb.com puts it). But Rodriguez isn't just acting — she's tough off the screen, too. At Sea Shepherd's recent "Sea No Evil" fundraiser, Rodriguez became their newest celebrity campaigner. But unlike many celebrities who are spokepeople or donors for their favorite organizations, Rodriguez announced that she plans to join Sea Shepherd's next anti-whaling campaign in Antarctica.

"So you guys are actually helping support the next team to go out to Antarctica and bust their asses on that ship, trying to save some whales," she said to the fundraiser crowd. "So, I'm going to be one of those people on board."

As EcoRazzi points out, this isn't the first time a celebrity has decided to join Paul Watson and crew in Antarctica. Two years ago, Daryl Hannah announced that she planned to be on the next Sea Shepherd campaign. Her commitment was eventually reduced to just a visit (due to a "conflict" that interfered with the three-month voyage), but it still brought good publicity to the cause.

Rodriguez has been a longtime supporter of animal welfare causes, although there have been times when the way she chose to show her support was questionable, like when she brought a 9-week-old white tiger cub to a New York fundraiser she hosted for a sanctuary.

But for someone with a reputation of being a bit of a Hollywood wild child, the intensity, passion and danger of going up against Japanese whalers on a Sea Shepherd mission in the Arctic Ocean might be just the right fit.
