Agricultural SWAT Teams Teach Schools To Eat Local Food

The agricultural version of SWAT teams—Farm-To-School Tactical Teams—will be touring schools to help them source more local food. It's an initiative of the “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” campaign as the Department of Agriculture starts to do more to support small farmers and sustainable food. One way they're working to develop kids' diet is investing to remove some of the hurdles that make it difficult for vegetables to go from New York farms to New York schools.
Moving more healthy food from local farms to schools is great, but moving kids in the opposite direction, and helping them learn about how the food is produced can instill a greater lifelong appreciation of food. And even better, as the Ethicurean reports, is the Life Lab which has been working to develop farms and gardens in schools for over 30 years — their education resources are used by over 1,000 schools
