Alegría en medio de la pobreza

Hola amigos,

My name is Cassandra Maximous and I am a rising 4th year at The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. This summer I will be traveling to Nicaragua to work with Manna Project International (MPI) in impoverished communities. The mission of MPI is to create "communities serving communities." Thus, along with 8 other college-aged volunteers, I will be working in three communities to teach English, Math, and Arts & Crafts, work in a Feeding Center, and educate young women about health in a community setting. There will surely be a plethora of opportunities for service and reaching out to the community.

I was in Nicaragua this past spring break with a group from UVA called Nicaraguan Orphan Fund which is supported by a larger service organization called OrphaNetwork.  I am excited to return to the dusty streets and tan children and hopefully pay a visit to the young children that I made connections with this past spring.

The title to this post translates to 'joy amidst poverty.' After my trip in Nicaragua just a few months ago, I returned home with a dual sense of peace and unrest - my friends, my amigos, were suffering and malnourished but despite it all, they were joyful and genuine. Their pleas were never in the form of complaint or annoyance but simply out of hope.

As I search for this joy while I am abroad, I anticipate that my posts will give rise to questions of poverty, health, inequality, and the effects of a historically corrupt government.

Stay tuned for more...
