Alliance for Truth Calls Puppy Mill Regulations a Step Toward Communism

Even though the polls are closed, the battle over Missouri's anti-puppy mill ballot initiative isn't over. Almost as soon as they were defeated, breeders and agricultural groups started cooking up plans to repeal, or at least dilute, Proposition B.

Earlier this week, Martin Matheny explained why the Missouri legislature needs to respect the vote. Barbara Schmitz, from the Missourians for the Protection of Dogs, agrees. She told the Kansas City Star, "If lawmakers do not respect the will of the people and do try to alter Prop B, we will fight to remind them that the voters have spoken."

Wayne Pacelle, President of the Humane Society of the United States, also took on some of the arguments against Prop B's passage in an open letter to the Missouri Farm Bureau.

But sometimes, nothing quite makes an argument like the opposition's own words, and leave it to The Daily Show to capture those choice words on camera.

Before the election, we saw Joe the Plumber making claims that Prop B would make it harder for middle-class Americans to own dogs. But according to Anita Andrews, Director of the Alliance for Truth, it's much worse than that. In fact, regulating puppy mills is just "one more step to making us a communist, socialist society."

In an interview with The Daily Show's Olivia Munn, Andrews likened Proposition B to ObamaCare, the federal health care bill: "They're expecting all the breeders to sit there and pay for exhorbitant amounts of care that are not needed, like adequate food, adequate water, adequate space."

As far as life's necessities go, these things are not subjective.

Andrews went on to list another problem with the law: "Animal rights activists want to prohibit stacking, yet we stack humans ... We stack humans in apartments all the time in all the cities." Although, as Olivia Munn comments, "most apartments don't allow your upstairs neighbor to shit on your head."

On the other side was Madeleine Bernstein, President of  the SPCA-LA, "whose sole purpose is the redistribution of wealth. Or in this case, puppies." When Olivia Munn takes her to Cesar Millan to get her  and her crazy ideas about banning puppy mills under control, the Dog Whisperer offered his opinion: "Puppy mills reflect the wrong way in America. If America is going to call himself a dog loving country, we must treat dogs humanely."

That's what the majority of Missouri voters agreed with last week and that's what the Missourians for the Protection of Dogs will continue fighting for. The coalition of  state and national animal welfare partners has widespread support, including endorsements from 150 vets and clinics, over 100 animal protection groups, religious leaders, businesses and government officials. You can add your voice of support, too, by telling Missouri legislators not to weaken Proposition B.
