AAVS Fall 08 coverAt Invisible Voices, Deb is talking about direct action, freedom, and exercising our rights.

The Grumpy Vegan reminds us that "wars kill animals, too" in one post and tells us, in another post, about a special "Paws for Politics" edition [PDF] of AV Magazine and about the Animals' Platform from the Animals and Society Institute.

Mark Hawthorne, author of Striking at the Roots (the book and the blog), has an article titled "Gay Rights or Animal Rights? It's Not One or the Other" up at American Chronicle.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund calls on us to keep fighting for the animals and to check out the new Web site for the Animal Bill of Rights. (More on this later!)

In addition to alerting us to Peaceful Prairie's situation this morning, the Animal Person blog also takes on the "token gestures" of the EU testing ban proposal today.

In an "Oh, they did not just say that" moment for me, the "Animal Welfare Approved" people yesterday encouraged consumers to "ask for Animal Welfare Approved® products [at their local stores] … it's the only way to facilitate change." Hmm...what's wrong with that? Oh, that's right: it isn't true. This is a way for people to maintain the status quo while feeling better about themselves, not a way to effect real change. But there are other, real ways to facilitate change. (And if you're going to ask your favorite stores and restaurants to start offering more of something because of concern for animals, ask for additional vegan options.)

Over at the PETA blog, Ingrid Newkirk has some inspiring things to say today in "For All Beings: Yes. We. Can." Yes, two PETA-related links in just two days. But there are some good things being said here, so read the post; here's my favorite part: "The time has come to stop thinking of animal rights as distracting or less deserving of our energy than other struggles for social justice. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.' All oppression, prejudice, violence, and cruelty are wrong and must be rejected no matter how novel the idea or how inconvenient the task."

And finally, Gristmill gives the lowdown on master chicken torturer Tyson's latest plans in "All the world's a CAFO."
