Animals in the Blogs: Wildlife, Watson, Welfare, and More
A noted in last week's news roundup, I can't possibly talk about every issue that comes up in the news and blogosphere each week or elaborate in detail on every thought I have, but I can at least send you to read these interesting and important blog posts and stories for yourself, right? Right. So I'll be doing that periodically. Following are links to ten blog posts from the past week that you should read (and if you're asking "What the hell?" with regard to the image on the right, just keep reading; the related link is near the end of the post):
The Reformed Fast Food Mascot (whose snarkiness I love more than I can say) asks, "Isn't this what they mean by the fox guarding the hen house?" in his review of animal welfare guidelines, and he is also as annoyed as I am by all the headlines and statements claiming that Prop 2 is going to stop, cure, or prevent cruelty: "California social consciences--I mean cruelty--could be cured by Prop 2."
Mark Hawthorne of Striking at the Roots gave some great pointers and directed us to valuable resources in "Being Prepared for Wildlife Rescues."
In "It Makes the Mind Boggle," Gary Francione of Animal Rights: The Abolitionist Approach gives one of his reactions to last weekend's New York Times Magazine's piece on Prop 2, Pacelle, and HSUS.
Animal Person provided an overview of a recent interview ("'Sticking it to the Man,' 20th Century Style") with Sea Shepherd captain and founder Paul Watson. I have a giant sloppy crush on Sea Shepherd, the whole operation. I really, really do.
Alex at That Vegan Girl pondered the "Hunters Bill of Rights" being pushed in Oklahoma: "Hunters don't need a Bill of Rights, they need a valid defense."
Suicide Food covers the absurd way animal products are advertised better than any other blog or group out there. This week, they gave us, among other astute analyses, their take on "Juicy Butts."
At the Vegan Soapbox, Elaine Vigneault responded to a SFGate.com blog post titled "Should I allow my 5-year-old to be a vegan?" (Answer: yes.)
Lisa of Dragonbird Sanctuary and PETA both gave us summaries and reactions to the recent Grey's Anatomy episode that tackled the issue of medical research on animals, with Dr. Izzie Stevens standing up as a champion for all animals (and specifically pigs, in this case) needlessly subjected to medical experimentation.
