April 22, 1970: Global warming warning on the first Earth Day
Sure, the hippie hairdos are good for a chuckle.
But you may laugh to keep from crying: Nearly 40 years later, most of the arguments these Earth Day demonstrators made about caring for the environment are still in play -- including the "awesome Earth Day warning" from government climatologist Dr. J. Murray Mitchell (reported by the newscaster at the end of the video) about "a greenhouse effect" that "could melt the Arctic ice cap."
Dr. Mitchell, who had a 35-year career as a senior climate expert with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (he died in 1990 at age 62) had been calling attention to human-propelled effects on the weather and the climate since the 1960's.
