Are You An It Girl?
Everyone now and then I'll be honoring women who do amazing things. Today, I am highlighting the efforts of Sarah Trahan. For the last three years, Sarah has continued to dedicate herself to rebuilding her home city of New Orleans. With the help of her parents, she turned her local church into a relief organization for those who had lost their homes as a result of the hurricane. As a relief worker, Sarah realized that many of the local children affected by the Hurricane recieved little to no therapy for the life-changing events they had seen unfold. It was at this point that she enrolled in the College of Psychology at McNeese University. Sarah shared some of her story with me below:
In 2005, during my freshman year of college, my hometown was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. One month later, the hometown of my boyfriend, now husband, was destroyed by Hurricane Rita. Between the two families that I loved and the education that I was determined to get, I faced a challenge I never saw coming. Yet somehow, I found myself so fortunate as to have a wonderful network of friends and managed to find the strength through my religious beliefs and upbringing to not only handle the tragedies all around me, but take part in helping become part of the solution...Before and after Katrina, I’ve always had a passion for the New Orleans area and the wonderful people that live here. For me, New Orleans is a lot more than a city. It is art, music and a spirit that can’t be broken – and I am glad to have played a part in keeping that spirit alive.
In honor of her humanitarian efforts, Orth Women's Health & Urology recently named Sarah Trahan the September "It Girl" - in a contest that sought to identify the ultimate real-life "It Girls" who embody confidence, reliability and compassion for the world they live in.
Sarah has submitted a great list of tips for how others can embody the change they wish to see in the world. Feel free to check them out and list other ways you think women can make a difference in their local communities.
