Barbie Goes To The Box Office

Big news everyone. Your favorite plastic piece of pop culture is going to hit the big screen. Yep, that's right, after 50 years of being seen as nothing more than a play toy, Barbie is finally getting a movie contract.

Melissa Silverstein over at Women and Hollywood shares the news:

Universal finally got Mattel to make a deal. Mattel has held onto the brand for a long time (50 years), and now that there are so many high concept movies being made out of characters they probably felt that the time was right to get in the game.

While Hollywood has tried to make every female star look like a Barbie, it is going to be amusing to see what Hollywood does with the "real thing." Will Universal try and shove the blond bimbo stereotype down our throats once more or will they modernize the vintage view of female perfection?

If you were writing the script for "Barbie: The Movie" what would it be about? Would she get the dream house, marry Ken and live happily ever after? Or should Mattel use this opportunity to work with Universal and create a more realistic vision of Barbie's world?
