BetterWorldBooks: Book Buying For Good

by Nathaniel Whittemore · 2009-09-29 01:10:00 UTC

As part of our celebration of William Kamkwamba's new book "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind," - we're pushing people to buy the book from our friends at Better World Books.

BWB is one of the most exciting social enterprises around. They help old books regain a new lease on life by taking what was headed to landfills and using an online store front to resell them. In this way, they've saves almost 30,000,000 books from landfills, in the process making enough money to donate over $7 million to global literacy programs.

From the standpoint of this blog, one of the coolest things about BWB is how they bring together their social, financial, and economic missions in a fully integrated model. One of the ground breaking things they've done is actually give their lead nonprofit partners an equity stake in their company, tying their success even more closely together.

One of the best ways you can celebrate social good is to begin to switch to BWB where possible. Start with "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" - just $16 including shipping for a brand new hardcover.
