Bravo: Top-Down Sacrifice in the White House - and Florida Schools

by Clay Burell · 2009-01-23 08:00:00 UTC

thumbs upIt's cool enough to see Obama announce a freeze in pay for White House staffers making over $100 grand a year. But it's even cooler to see this:

Four out of five School Board members agreed Tuesday that Hernando County administrators deserve a raise this year.

But at least 16 principals and other senior officials are saying just the opposite, that hard times are not the time for senior staff to be taking extra public money.

In a petition that began circulating at a principals' meeting last month, administrators told superintendent Wayne Alexander that they would rather do without a raise than see teachers or staff laid off.

Bravo. [Update: But OUCH: Not so fast. Things aren't so inspiring in all Florida's schools, as Brandt comments below. Thanks, Brandt.]
