Breaking - Aid Worker Killed in Afghanistan

by Michael Bear · 2008-12-01 02:08:00 UTC

A woman working for UNHCR was killed last week in the Surkh Rod district of Nangarhar province.

According to the statement released by the UN:

"Belqis Mazloomyar was shot dead in front of elders at a meeting on 26 November of the local shura at Lower Sheikh Mesri, a temporary settlement for returnees. Her murderer has not been identified and at this stage the reasons for the attack remain unclear."

Including this most recent attack, a total of 32 aid workers have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.  For more information about attacks against aid workers, see here.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Mazloomyar's family and colleagues.
