Team 'Fair Trade Europe' has been racking up the world records lately. First, Wales is declared the first Fair Trade Nation. Then London becomes the Fair Trade Capital of the world.  Over the weekend more than 380,000 UK Fair Traders set the world record for the biggest banana-eating event. Now, to top it all off, Finland breaks the world record of the World's Largest Fair Trade Coffee Break -- taking away the title from the United States.

So for World Fair Trade Day this year, Fair Traders in the United States are looking to re-claim and surpass the Fair Trade Coffee Break record.

In the U.S., we’re doing our part by setting the record straight. Please join us as we help break last year’s world’s largest Fair Trade coffee break by participating in your own break on or around May 9. Fair Trade supporters around the country will take a break and enjoy a cup of Fair Trade coffee, a bar of Fair Trade chocolate, bake a cake using Fair Trade sugar, join in a drum circle with Fair Trade musical instruments or participate in a game of soccer using Fair Trade soccer balls. Whatever you do, please make it a Fair Trade break – because everything’s better when it’s fair. Visit www.FTRN.org to learn more and to get involved.

Last year, over 12,000 people across the U.S. and Canada raised their cup of Fair Trade coffee (or tea) setting the world record. Now, with World Fair Trade Day coming up again on May 9th, not only are we trying to break last year's record, we're hoping to take the title back from Finland. For more information, head over to the Fair Trade Resource Network site to get all the facts along with promotional material to get others involved.

Also, there will be WFTD09 National Event Conference Calls during the month of March. It will be a place to share ideas on event planning and getting a grassroots movement going to help expand the Break. The first phone call will be this Thursday, March 12th at 8pm EST. E-mail the lovely, Shayna Harris for the details: wftday@gmail.com.

In the meantime, check out the video of last year's event.
