Bristol Palin: Abstinence Is Unrealistic
In a moment of clarity unseen during the 2008 Presidential race, Bristol Palin - the daughter of Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin - speaks to the press about giving birth to her first child at age 18 and says that the idea of abstinence is not realistic:
While it is honorable that Bristol Palin decided to have her child at such a young age, I find that her honesty in this interview is also something to be praised. Despite her mother's seemingly unrealistic approach to sex through abstinence only education, Bristol has the real life experience to say that it doesn't work, thus supporting the argument for comprehensive sex education.
According to NARAL, there is already overwhelming public support for honest sex education: 99 percent of Americans believe it is appropriate for young people to have information about STDs, and 94 percent of Americans think it is appropriate to teach young people about birth control.
Perhaps, with time, even Bristol Palin could be an ally in the pro-choice movement for those who don't have a large, supportive family to help out a pregnant teenager like she does. She may see something that her mother hasn't been able to - the right to choose leaves options for everyone.
