Caribou Coffee To Go Sustainable by 2011
Caribou Coffee not only has the best iced coffee (you must try the cold press), but it has announced that it will be going 100 percent sustainable by the end of 2011, according to SustainableBusiness.com.
This is good news from the second-largest gourmet coffeehouse company in the U.S. (guess who's first!), which will be the first major U.S. coffeehouse to offer 100 percent Rainforest Alliance certified brews, according to QSR Magazine.
Rainforest Alliance certification, managed by the Sustainable Agriculture Network, requires that coffee growers practice agriculture focused on environmental, social and economic sustainability. That involves conserving the environment, protecting wildlife and giving workers fair wages, good conditions and reasonable benefits.
Caribou is celebrating by offering shoppers a choice of two new 100 percent Rainforest Alliance Certified blends — Lacuna and Lakeshore.
"Caribou Coffee’s tremendous commitment to sourcing 100 percent of their coffee from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms will benefit the lives of thousands of farmers, farm workers and their families," Tensie Whelan, president of the Rainforest Alliance, told SustainableBusiness.com. "It will also help protect waterways and wildlife, conserve fragile ecosystems, and promote soil health. We hope other retailers will see Caribou’s example and follow suit."
Selfishly, I hope the cold press doesn't end up tasting too different after all is said and done.
