Cat Marinating in Car Trunk Rescued During Traffic Stop

When Buffalo Police pulled over Gary L. Korkuc for running a stop sign, they heard a cat crying from the trunk. It's bad enough to drive around with your cat locked in the trunk of your car, but that form of cruelty would be far too sane for Korkuc. The officers opened the trunk of his car to find a cat in a cage, marinating in crushed red pepper, chili pepper, salt and oil.

Korkuc was planning on cooking the four-year-old feline — not because he normally dined on cat or had caught a re-run of Beppe Bigazzi's show featuring a recipe for cat stew, but because the cat had been "mean" to him. He also told police that the cat was "possessive, greedy and wasteful." Somehow these personality differences led Korkuc to the conclusion that he needed to make a meal out of his pet.

Gina M. Browning, from the SPCA Serving Erie County, said, "It's disgusting. It surprises me every day what people are capable of when it comes to violence, whether it is animals or people." Korkuc had adopted the cat from the SPCA in mid-May. I think it's safe to assume that nowhere on his adoption application did he mention that he considered cooking his cat a suitable form of punishment.

In a memo, the SPCA stressed the obvious: "Do not under any circumstances adopt to this man ever again."

As for the allegedly mean, possessive, greedy, and wasteful cat, he was subject to two baths Sunday night to de-spice his fur. The selfish critter purred his way through the ordeal. Any cat that can sit in hot peppers and oil, endure a double bath and come out of it purring is pretty amazing. I'd say Kurkoc didn't deserve him, but that's an understatement; Kurkoc doesn't deserve a pet rock.

The resilient cat has already found a new home and Kurkoc is being charged with animal cruelty.
