Catholic Church Goes After Gay Adoption

LGBT adoptionSo much for the gospel of love.  The latest bit of vitriol coming from the Catholic Church is out of Scotland today, where church officials have attacked the rights of gays and lesbians to adopt children.  Commenting on a case where two men were awarded adoption rights for a child, church spokesman Peter Kearney said, "There is an overwhelming body of evidence showing that same-sex relationships are inherently unstable and reduce the life expectancy of those involved."  (PinkNews)  Kearney went on to say that he can't fathom how gay adoption is in the best interest of children.

Really?  Because best as we can tell, every sound scientific study done on same-sex adoption shows that children brought up in gay and lesbian households are just as stable and fare just as well as children brought up in heterosexual families.

The rhetoric coming out of Scotland is hardly surprising, though.  In October, the Scottish Bishop's Conference called gay adoption "gravely wrong." One Catholic bishop in particular, Bishop Jim Devine, has accused gays and lesbians of lying about persecution and falsely trying to tie themselves to the Holocaust.

Oh yeah, he said that.  March 2008 to be exact, and here's his words:

"The homosexual lobby has been extremely effective in aligning itself with minority groups...It is ever present at the service each year for the Holocaust memorial, as if to create for themselves the image of a group of people under persecution." (PinkNews)

Wow, that's vile.  Is this what passes for pastoral nowadays?  If so, no wonder church numbers are shrinking.
