Cindy McCain Digs Gay Marriage
Many a Republican might be celebrating the victory of Scott Brown in Massachusetts, thinking that it's the biggest thing to hit the world since sliced bread, the wheel, or the acai berry. But Brown's not the only mover and shaker in Republican circles making news today. So, too, is Cindy McCain, the wife of Sen. John McCain who came within roughly 100 electoral votes from being First Lady.
Cindy, following in the footsteps of her daughter, Meghan, is turning down the glow of the right-wing halo around Scott Brown's head. How? By becoming yet another Republican supporter of same-sex marriage. So while the National Organization for Marriage and official hate group Mass Resistance smile with glee about that homo-loving Martha Coakley losing in Massachusetts, all of us can at least take heart that some Republicans have had it with their pseudo savoir faire.
Sure, it would have been really nice for Cindy McCain to have professed her love for gay marriage during the 2008 election, when her husband was not only running for President, but endorsing California's Proposition 8. She deserves some flak for that.
But on the whole, this is a rather big to-do. Because if Cindy McCain, Dick Cheney, Meghan McCain, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and David Brooks can all say they're for gay marriage, what's to stop someone like, say, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy (who would probably align himself with most of these folks) from coming on board?
Of course, I'm not so sure we can expect Dick Cheney to join Adam Bouska's awesome No on H8 portrait gallery, much like Cindy McCain just did. But then again, how many of us are really itching to see a close-up portrait of Dick "GFY" Cheney, anyway?
