Congressmen in Gaza: What if Gaza Was in the US?
As part of the effort to justify the death and destruction perpetrated on Gazans, Israeli apologists far and wide asked the question: what if America was in Israel's situation, with rockets raining down on innocent civilians? A fair question as long is it comes paired with this one: what if another country was blockading us because they didn't like who we elected to be our president?
As reported here and elsewhere, two members of Congress visited Gaza on Thursday, Keith Ellison and Brian Baird. The JTA offers up some great quotes, including this question:
“If this had happened in our own country, there would be national outrage and an appeal for urgent assistance. We are glad that the Obama administration acted quickly to send much needed funding for this effort but the arbitrary and unreasonable Israeli limitations on food and repair essentials is unacceptable and indefensible. People, innocent children, women and non-combatants, are going without water, food and sanitation, while the things they so desperately need are sitting in trucks at the border, being denied permission to go in” said Baird and Ellison.
Expect AIPAC to remember this, and try to defeat these two in the 2010 elections.
