DoE flowchartDuncan announced the nomination of Carmel Martin for the post of Assistant Secretary for Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development.

In the press release, Duncan said,

Carmel has been a tremendous leader and extraordinary advocate for improving education in our country and her vast policy experience will be a great asset to the department.

The presser highly touts Carmel's "extensive background in the education field," but conspicuously absent to this teacher is any experience working in schools. She advised Ted Kennedy, worked in a law firm's education section, and worked in the Justice Department enforcing "key provisions of the Civil Rights Act." She also worked with the Center for American Progress, where she seems to have left a nicely progressive, "Broader, Bolder Approach" footprint.

Anybody have any insights to share on this one?

As for the question on so many minds - "Will Linda Darling-Hammond get an appointment?" - tomorrow may answer that one. Stay tuned.
