Ellen Page: "Totally Pro-Choice"

I've seen this quote from Ellen Page, who rose to stardom as a pregnant teen in Juno, on at least three feminist blogs already today, and I can't resist sharing it with all of you.

In a recent interview with the Guardian about her latest film Whip It, in which her character joins a roller derby, Page lets the world know, "I am a feminist and I am totally pro-choice, but what's funny is when you say that people assume that you are pro-abortion. I don't love abortion but I want women to be able to choose and I don't want white dudes in an office being able to make laws on things like this. I mean what are we going to do — go back to clothes hangers?" It's always great when a movie stars lays down some feminist, pro-woman love.

And Page's latest film, Whip It, is by all accounts a bad-ass female empowerment tale, which I'm now even more excited to see, given that now I know what a cool pro-choice actress it has. Plus, I love Drew Barrymore, who gets to play roller derby with the best in her directorial debut.

Other high-profile celebs could stand to take a page from Page's book and stand up as proud pro-choice feminists. Maybe the tabloids could start splashing those stories across their front covers instead of the latest story of break-up and make-up.
