Equal Exchange is a pioneering Fair Trade company in the United States that was formed in 1986. Since the beginning, they have envisioned a food system that empowers farmers and consumers, supports small farmer co-ops, and uses sustainable farming methods -- all the tenets of Fair Trade. Equal Exchange recently gave 13 teams of filmmakers in Boston, Portland and Seattle a pretty exciting task of portraying the theme of being "dangerously disconnected" from your food...in 48 hours. The 13 teams of filmmakers were given a few simple guidelines:

  • a theme: Dangerously disconnected from food
  • a prop: Burlap coffee sack
  • a phrase: "It doesn't have to be that way..."
  • a deadline: Two days to write, film and edit a 3-minute short film

The results can be seen here and voted on by you! Here's a taste of one of the films. It's of a guy breaking up with his Starbuck's coffee cup. Ummmm...need I say more?
