Ecotrust, an amazing NGO in Portland, Oregon, has launched the next generation of Web-based, local-food engagement systems, called Food Hub. Food Hub allows producers to easily connect with consumers, including institutions and grocers. It allows artisan producers to link up with their best customers and for needy cooks to search thousands of items to find what they need somewhere nearby.

The site claims that it is designed to serve "the food community, including retail grocers, schools, institutional buyers, caterers, restaurants, bakeries, food processors, manufacturers, farmers, ranchers, fishermen, vintners, artisan producers of specialty items, and more." More? What else is there?! This Food Hub thing has it covered.

A service like this is worth paying for, especially if you're a supplier, restaurant or institution. The annual membership fee for buyers and sellers is $100. But wait! The site is in beta test stage until the end of January, and if you join by then, you'll receive a $20 rebate. Not quite sure you're ready to spring for a membership? Email connect@food-hub.org for a free guest pass so you can get a look under the hood.
