Freedom for the Weekend: Break the Chain Campaign
Well, it's Friday afternoon, and that means the weekend is almost here! W00t! Perhaps you're reading this blog because you're bored at work or school and you're thinking about what you want to do this weekend. How about spending part of your weekend fighting slavery? Each week I'll profile a different anti-trafficking nonprofit who you can connect with to help free slaves and prevent slavery around the world. So, spend a couple hours this weekend getting to know this nonprofit through their website, and then get involved!
This Week's Profile: Break the Chain Campaign
The Bottom Line: Break The Chain Campaign seeks to minimize the effects of human trafficking, modern-day slavery and worker exploitation through comprehensive direct service, research, outreach, advocacy, training, and technical assistance.
What They Do: They have a number of different programs, including pro bono legal services, policy and advocacy work, training and education on human trafficking. They have specifically focused a lot of efforts on victims trafficked into domestic servitude in private homes.
What Can I Do?: If you live in the Washington, DC area, you can volunteer at their office in a number of different roles. You can also donate online to support the victims they serve. They also have suggestions for how to get involved in anti-trafficking work in general, even if it's not with Break the Chain Campaign.
Why They Rock: In addition to helping trafficked domestic workers get their lives back, they also have fought to hold diplomats who traffic workers accountable for their actions, despite diplomatic immunity. Now that's a tough fight.
So now that you've got some basic information on Break the Chain Campaign, visit their website this weekend and get involved. And on Monday morning when everyone else is talking about sleeping in and watching tv over the weekend, you can say, "What did I do this weekend? Oh, just the usual -- abolition of slavery."
Do you have a favorite nonprofit you'd like to see featured here? If so, let me know!
