Freedom for the Weekend: Catholic Legal Immigration Network

Well, it's Friday afternoon, and that means the weekend is almost here!  W00t! Perhaps you're reading this blog because you're bored at work or school and you're thinking about what you want to do this weekend.  How about spending part of your weekend fighting slavery?  Each week I'll profile a different anti-trafficking nonprofit who you can connect with to help free slaves and prevent slavery around the world.  So, spend a couple hours this weekend getting to know this nonprofit through their website, and then get involved!

This Week's Profile: Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC)

The Bottom Line: CLINIC's goal is to enhance and expand delivery of legal services to indigent and low-income immigrants, principally through diocesan immigration programs, and to meet the immigration needs identified by the Catholic Church in the United States. They are a Catholic organization, but they serve immigrants regardless of their religion and and frequently work with trafficking victims.

What They Do: They have several legal programs for trafficking victims, particularly foreign victims, including a Center for Immigrant Rights and a Center for Citizenship and Immigrant Communities. They also have resources and trainings for attorneys who represent trafficking victims and immigrants.

What Can I Do?: You can become a member to receive all their resources and updates about their work.  You can also donate via their website.

Why They Rock: By partnering with other Catholic agencies around the country, they are able to get legal help to victims who need it. Immigration legal assistance is often one of the most pressing needs for trafficking survivors.

So now that you've got some basic information on CLINIC, visit their website this weekend and get involved.  And on Monday morning when everyone else is talking about sleeping in and watching tv over the weekend, you can say, "What did I do this weekend?  Oh, just the usual -- abolition of slavery."

Do you have a favorite nonprofit you'd like to see featured here?  If so, let me know!
