Freedom for the Weekend: Jean R. Cadet Restavek Foundation

by Amanda Kloer · 2010-02-19 13:00:00 UTC

Well, it's Friday afternoon, and that means the weekend is almost here!  W00t! Perhaps you're reading this blog because you're bored at work or school and you're thinking about what you want to do this weekend. How about spending part of your weekend fighting slavery? Each week I'll profile a different anti-trafficking nonprofit who you can connect with to help free slaves and prevent slavery around the world. So, spend a couple hours this weekend getting to know this nonprofit through their website, and then get involved!

This Week's Profile: Jean R. Cadet Restavek Foundation

The Bottom Line: The foundation's mission is to put an end to child slavery in Haiti, often referred to as the restavek system. They provide restavek children opportunities for education, advocate for enslaved children, and raise awareness on a global scale to end modern-day slavery in Haiti.

What They Do: Before the earthquake, they had a number of educational and public advocacy programs focused on helping individual children and advocating for an end to modern-day slavery in Haiti. Post earthquake, they have focused on relief efforts to better the lives of child slaves.

What Can I Do?: You can tap into the national and international attention going toward Haiti and host a fundraiser or donate to their programs. You can also spread the word about restaveks, especially in the context of Haiti relief efforts to make sure this group isn't left out of the aid. Or, you can invite Jean Robert, a former restavek, to speak at your event.

Why They Rock: The foundation was working in Haiti before the earthquake, and they'll be there long after you and I have forgotten about it.

So now that you've got some basic information on Jean R. Cadet Restavek Foundation, visit their website this weekend and get involved. And on Monday morning when everyone else is talking about sleeping in and watching TV over the weekend, you can say, "What did I do this weekend? Oh, just the usual -- abolition of slavery."

Do you have a favorite nonprofit you'd like to see featured here?  If so, let me know!
