Freedom for the Weekend: KOK
Well, it's Friday afternoon, and that means the weekend is almost here! W00t! Perhaps you're reading this blog because you're bored at work or school and you're thinking about what you want to do this weekend. How about spending part of your weekend fighting slavery? Each week I'll profile a different anti-trafficking nonprofit who you can connect with to help free slaves and prevent slavery around the world. So, spend a couple hours this weekend getting to know this nonprofit through their website, and then get involved!
This Week's Profile: KOK
The Bottom Line: KOK is the German nationwide activist coordination group combating trafficking in women and violence against women in the process of migration. They are active on a regional, national and international basis. Their goal is to combat trafficking in women and pursue the realization of human rights for female migrants.
What They Do: KOK is an umbrella organization, which is comprised of 36 member organizations in Germany that provide services to trafficked women. They lobby at international, national, and local levels for better policies for immigrant and trafficked women. They also support direct services for victims, including counseling and health care.
What Can I Do?: If you live in Germany, you can become a member or sponsor of their work. KOK also accepts volunteers and interns to assist with their work, and can provide a great experience for folks starting out in the anti-trafficking field.
Why They Rock: KOK is network of anti-trafficking groups in Germany, and they help to unify and organize the movement. Since member organizations are communicating through KOK, they can avoid duplicating work and use resources smartly.
So now that you've got some basic information on KOK, visit their website this weekend and get involved. And on Monday morning when everyone else is talking about sleeping in and watching tv over the weekend, you can say, "What did I do this weekend? Oh, just the usual- abolition of slavery."
