Freedom for the Weekend: La Strata
Well, it's Friday afternoon, and that means the weekend is almost here! W00t! Perhaps you're reading this blog because you're bored at work or school and you're thinking about what you want to do this weekend. How about spending part of your weekend fighting slavery? Each week I'll profile a different anti-trafficking nonprofit who you can connect with to help free slaves and prevent slavery around the world. So, spend a couple hours this weekend getting to know this nonprofit through their website, and then get involved!
This Week's Profile: La Strada International
The Bottom Line: La Strada International a European anti-trafficking network operating in nine countries. The La Strada members share the same objectives, the same philosophy on trafficking and work according to the same basic programme.
What They Do: They engage in advocacy and education efforts, and support direct services in Europe. The three pillars of the La Strada programme are The Information & Lobby Campaign, The Prevention & Education campaign, and The Assistance & Support campaign.
What Can I Do?: International volunteers can work at their main office in Amsterdam, and local volunteers can work at a La Strada office in their country. You can also donate to support their programs online.
Why They Rock: La Strada works in a lot of countries like Belarus and Ukraine which have had a significant trafficking problem, and helps these countries develop better policies around human trafficking.
So now that you've got some basic information on La Strada International, visit their website this weekend and get involved. And on Monday morning when everyone else is talking about sleeping in and watching tv over the weekend, you can say, "What did I do this weekend? Oh, just the usual- abolition of slavery."
Do you have a favorite nonprofit you'd like to see featured here? If so, let me know!
