Freedom for the Weekend: Survivors Connect
Well, it's Friday afternoon, and that means the weekend is almost here! W00t! Perhaps you're reading this blog because you're bored at work or school and you're thinking about what you want to do this weekend. How about spending part of your weekend fighting slavery? Each week I'll profile a different anti-trafficking nonprofit who you can connect with to help free slaves and prevent slavery around the world. So, spend a couple hours this weekend getting to know this nonprofit through their website, and then get involved!
This Week's Profile: Survivors Connect
The Bottom Line: Survivors Connect's mission is to empower the survivor and activist, advocate the movement, and network to build a globalized response to modern-day slavery and human trafficking using the power of technology.
What They Do: They work to integrate cell phone technology into anti-trafficking efforts through their Helpline SMS program, part of which they are currently implementing in Haiti to prevent trafficking. They also operate several awareness projects, including an educational webinar series and a survivors quilt.
What Can I Do?: If you have a old cell phone, you can donate it to their Phones for Freedom campaign, which helps get technology in the hands of grassroots organizations. You can also learn about the many ways you can volunteer to help out the network. Or, you can donate online to support their work.
Why They Rock: They made several films, both about their work and the issue of human trafficking in general, which are available on their website. Some are in Hindi, some in English, and a few are available in both languages.
So now that you've got some basic information on Survivors Connect, visit their website this weekend and get involved. And on Monday morning when everyone else is talking about sleeping in and watching TV over the weekend, you can say, "What did I do this weekend? Oh, just the usual — abolition of slavery."
Do you have a favorite nonprofit you'd like to see featured here? If so, let me know!
