7 breakfasts series; Or HiltchWhat to read, what to read ...

- The Ethicurean hosts commentary from the owner of a small flock of hens on how to deal with cannibal hens. They also caught that while the Bush administration finalized the COOL regulation, their version of the rule exempts many of the things it claims to cover if they're smoked, roasted or frozen. Leave it to the Bush regime to say they're requiring labeling frozen food, but then not require that. Tuesday can't come fast enough.

- A Pennsylvania farmer says local agriculture is booming as people look for sources of food grown nearer to home.

- Eating Liberally's kat asks Marion Nestle about our neo-Dickensian diets. Bland, pasty, unvaried food doesn't feed the body or soul well in any era.

- Burger King will give you free burgers for giving up facebook friends. There's so many layers of ick in that offer, I can barely come to terms with it.

- The Humane Society has put out their legislative change agenda for animals, including what sound like very sensible humane treatment recommendations for the USDA to enforce.

- The USDA has reopened the comment period for a biotechnology regulation. I'll be looking into that more and getting back to you on it. I feel some comments coming on.
