Friday Femme Fatale: Fashion Forward Feminism?

by Jen Nedeau · 2009-03-13 14:10:00 UTC

Here are the stories that caught my eye this past week:

Juliet Lapidos at Slate writes, Chauvinist Pigs in Space: Why Battlestar Galactica is not so frakking feminist after all. The AFL-CIO posts about inequality in the labor market and how the US is so far behind in offering maternity leave and a post on how unions benefit women.

The Feminist Majority Foundation reports on a poll that finds Californians remain split on Same-Sex Marriage Amendment.

The American Association of University Women writes about the Pentagon announcing a Sexual Assault Prevention Campaign saying:

I was glad to read this morning that the U.S. Department of Defense is preparing to launch a new sexual assault prevention campaign. Last year I was horrified by the Congressional hearings on sexual assault in the military, which revealed that over one-fourth of women in the military had been sexually assaulted or raped while on duty, so I see DOD's acknowledgment of and plans for addressing this problem as a positive move.

Additionally, the Polaris Project reports that Virginia passes an Anti-Human Trafficking / Abduction Bill, while Pam's House Blend shares the disturbing news for Catholic's: The Vatican defends excommunication of mom of 9-year-old rape victim.

Bitch Magazine critiques Glamour's attempt to make women's history month a fashion statement, but asks readers to decide saying:

Alright, enough of my snarkiness. Clearly I am annoyed by this photo spread, but as always, I want to hear from you. (I would also like to once again encourage you to view the slideshow and will entice you by mentioning that it includes a photo of Lindsay Lohan dressed as Madonna.) What do you think of "American Icons"? Am I way off base by thinking that its attempts at inspiration fall a little flat? Are you inspired by these images? Why or why not?

Finally, keep your fingers crossed that a bill Obama signed this week could offer discounts for birth control pills by giving pharmaceutical companies a financial incentive to sell drugs at deep discounts to a range of health care providers, including college clinics.

That's all for this week's Friday Femme Fatale. Thanks for reading and have a great weekend.
