Friday Food: Going Out for Ethiopian

From acidcookie's Flickr stream
A large portion of this blog is dedicated to farm animal issues and to encouraging people to stop killing and eating animals and animal products and to instead move toward a compassionate plant-based diet. And this, obviously, is why there have been periodic food posts on the blog. It's far easier to imagine going vegan when you're presented with lots of scrumptious recipes and photos. And I want to start featuring these food posts with a little more regularity instead of just throwing them out there randomly every once in a while. So I decided as of last Friday to start featuring Friday Food posts each week.
Today, I was planning to share a recipe and photo from one of the vegan blogosphere's many talented cooks, but then I remembered that I left something out of the Veganism with Restrictions post the other day. In the lead-up to that post, Change.org's Sustainable Food blogger and I found that we share a love of Ethiopian food, and she suggested that I recommend it because, apparently, in addition to the really delicious, nutritious, and relatively inexpensive nature of Ethiopian vegetarian platters, injera--the thin, spongy bread used to scoop up and eat the food--is free of gluten too (I apologize if this is common knowledge; I admit gluten-issue ignorance).
Featured above and below are some photos courtesy of Flickr users of some typical Ethiopian vegetarian platters, which include a variety of flavors, textures, vegetables, and spices, all wonderful (and I say "vegetarian" because that's how they're usually labeled in the menu, but these dishes and platters are indeed vegan). If there's an Ethiopian restaurant in your area, and you haven't tried it yet, make plans to go soon.
