Gabriel Immigration Reform (GIR): Looking for Love and Marriage

by Alonso Chehade · 2010-03-11 00:23:00 -0800

“The Undocumented Original Gabe" is on a quest for love.

Gabe shares in his blog "Documenting Me" that he was only seven years old when brought to the United States, a country in which he has now lived for two decades. Gabe has since obtained an Industrial Engineering degree that he can’t use, and is growing frustrated with his current situation and a broken immigration system that offers nothing except marrying a U.S Citizen as the path to legalization. A future wife gives Gabe hope, but also a lot of anxiety, as he "has absolutely zero game," in his words.

Yet Gabe is exhausted from being held hostage from personal achievement and HE NEEDS PAPERS! And he's been given a push from the U.S. Congress in the form of no comprehensive immigration reform and no DREAM Act. With an "enough is enough" spirit, Gabe is committing to find and marrying a beautiful American girl, one he can love, and one that can change his future in more than one way. Yes, Gabe has launched a national campaign to help him find an American wife and U.S. citizenship: Gabe Immigration Reform (GIR).

As Gabe develops his dating skills, learns about woman, shops for a ring within his budget, and meets new Americans, GIR is gaining support and fans all across the nation, especially in the states of California and Minnesota. The campaign is raising awareness on more than just Gabe's dating adventures -- it is calling attention to the current nonsensical immigration reality for many undocumented students and professionals who can’t continue their education or use their degrees because they haven't settled down yet.

Gabe's journey to walk down the aisle to legalization is a satirical commentary (he's not really looking to tie the knot) on the problems of our immigration system, which refuses to allow a bright youth to make use of his engineering degree and contribute to the country, a waste that could be remedied by passing comprehensive immigration reform or the DREAM Act.
