Happy Sunday! Since I associate the word "Sunday" with "relax and read about art and culture," here's a link to a wiki that attempts to gather as much information as possible on "Art and the Gay and Lesbian Rights and Liberation Movements." The site takes 1969 as its tipping point (to coincide with the Stonewall Riots), and looks at how LGBT people have influenced the world of art, both here in the States and around the globe.

Is there an overwhelming chunk of information on this page?  Absolutely.

But it's also cool to see in one place a list of those artists whose work has influenced the LGBT movements for the past forty years.  From Robert Mapplethorpe to Katie Niles, from Andy Warhol to Catherine Opie, a host of names are listed (including Keith Haring, whose work is pictured above).  The site also has an announcement that the Smithsonian will be hosting its first ever queer show this coming June, to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.  The show is entitled, "Hide & Seek: Same-Sex Desire in American Portraiture," and will open this June at the National Portrait Gallery.
