Good Cop, Bad Cop, Eviction-Style

Tell me if this sounds familiar to you:

"Although their leases were supposed to run through Tuesday, tenants of temporary apartments in the Lafitte public housing development said Saturday that they were told they had to move out immediately or face arrest...Two other tenants, Carol Johnson and Monica Jackson, said the same [Housing Authority of New Orleans] manager, whom they knew only as Ms. Watson, told them that police would go through the development Saturday night and arrest anyone who remained for trespassing. [...]

The tenants all said they would be out of their apartments by 6 p.m., although HANO general counsel Wayne Woods said later that they did not have to move out Saturday.

"They're still tenants until the 31st," Woods said, adding that he had spoken with HANO employee Lois Watson and that she said she had made no such announcements.

Woods said that in case any tenants were still living in Lafitte, he would send HANO employees to the complex to clear up the misunderstanding.

Nothing like threats and planned confusion to override rental agreements and get those pesky poor tenants out of their homes!  I'm sure today and tomorrow will be highly productive days in preparing these units for demolition.
