One of the most notable phenomena of 2009 was the pervasive Susan Boyle videos from Britain's version of American Idol, "Britain's Got Talent." Her heart wrenching rendition of the Les Miserables hit "I Dreamed A Dream" launched her to stardom overnight. Apparently, the gang at venture firm First Round Capital noticed as well, and the song serves as the backdrop for their geekily fun Holiday Card.

It's actually pretty appropriate. Building a startup is about freedom and opportunity and mobility and agency sure. But most of all it's about the idea that people can follow their passions and breathe life into their ideas. That's something worth singing about.

Two random notes. It's actually a pretty difficult task to figure out how to sum up a startup in the three to five words they use to rhyme these lines. That's probably good practice. Second, I wonder how many entrepreneurs have watched this video and said "Damn, that's the type of VC I wan't to work with!" Not taking oneself too seriously is a pretty immensely valuable thing.
