How The Recession is Hitting Food

I can tell you how the recession is hitting MY food. I'm cooking more, eating out less, and learning to do things like make my own jam (a great way to use up bruised fruit available for super-cheap at farmers markets). But I'm certainly not cutting back on organics or local food. I'm just being a bit more choosy. Maybe $10/lb for blueberries is a bit too much for me. I'll stick with the 5 lbs for $4 deal on oranges. Here are a few articles that talk about how the recession is hitting other people's eating habits.

Not Your Grandfathers Recession - Literally says that 31% of people under age 65 have cut down their spending on alcohol and cigarettes, and 23% are planting "recession gardens" to save money on food. I hate the recession, but that's not exactly bad news. I just wish we could see those same results AND have a good economy.

Another article talks about seven recession shopping trends. On the good side, they say people are cooking more and eating out less, and the local and sustainable food trends are still strong. On the bad side? More people are turning from grocery stores and sit-down restaurants to Wal-Mart and fast food. Yuck.
