How To: Support Female Veterans

by Jen Nedeau · 2009-07-27 07:41:00 UTC

I am starting a new series here on Change.org - a "How To" series, which will outline a few ways to be an effective activist for women's rights, file a discrimination claim, start a protest, or execute a campaign.

For the first "How To" - I am going to outline how you can support female veterans and take action on their behalf that was inspired by some conversations had with the Feminist Advisory Board for Obama.

1) Supporting pending or new legislation for female Veterans

* Write letters
* Place phone calls to Congress
* Raise consciousness by blogging, tweeting, sharing the news with friends and family

2) Get to know the issue better by visiting female Veterans at Walter Reed, or a VA Nursing Home in another state

3) Volunteer or seek out support from non-profits such as the Service Womens Action Network (SWAN) is non-partisan and non-profit, and for women Veterans. By writing letters of support that include a connection with a group like SWAN, it can give you more credibility.

4) Ask tough questions. Topics of military sexual trauma and unexplained female veteran deaths should not go by unnoticed. Make sure to share them and ask questions of the Obama administration on these topics.
