Is KFC Trying to Kill Us?

It would seem with their latest concoction, the Double Down, that KFC is trying to kill us. I'm all for thinking outside the bun, but KFC's new sandwich that replaces a bun with two pieces of fried chicken is over-the-top disgusting. The Double Down also contains two slices of bacon, Monterey Jack, pepper jack, and Colonel's sauce (which contains more than 20 ingredients). As Huffington Post's Adam J. Rose joked, "Evidently, no vegetables were harmed in the making of this sandwich." Unfortunately, the same may not be true of eaters of the mammoth meal.

The Double Down weighs in at 540 calories, a whopping 32 grams of fat and 1,380 milligrams of sodium. They also offer a grilled version, and this 'healthier' alternative is 460 calories, 23 grams of fat and 1,430 milligrams of sodium, well over half the recommended daily maximum. The target market for their product is most definitely men, as this ad reveals, and apparently very hungry men at that.

In case the Double Down isn't quite enough, you may want to wash it down with a the new "trenta," 30-plus ounce coffee drink recently introduced from Starbucks that seems to fit into the same category as KFC's latest brain child. As our consciousness of food and healthy eating seems to grow, so too do products that are the antithesis -- something that may be reminiscent of Hummer logic, as Treehugger's Brian Merchant writes: The Double Down's primary claim to fame is that it feeds our 'screw it' mentality.

Hopefully, that's exactly what most consumers will say to KFC when the Double Down appears on the menu next week.
