Is Oil Ever NOT Connected to War?

Sudan formally joined the African Petroleum Producers Association (APPA) yesterday with a signing ceremony in Abuja.

According to Nigeria's Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr Rilwanu Lukman, since its founding in 1986, "the association has created the much-needed platform for exchange of experiences and ideas amongst APPA countries."

Given the membership list, I can't help but wonder: Does said "exchange of experience and ideas" include ways to use oil for revenue/political cover whilst conducting disastrous wars (civil, and otherwise) and/or trampling the most basic human rights of one's own citizens?

And to Energy Gluttons elsewhere in the world: How often do you stop to think about the human cost of your weekly fill-up? Ever?

Perhaps we should start a poster campaign at gas stations.
