It occurs to me that this video will be funny for some, perplexing for others, with another group astounded by the ability of Israelis to laugh and make jokes about something that led to more than 1300 deaths, mostly civilians. And yet, it must be watched.

Eretz Nehederet, is Israel's version of Saturday Night Live (some say.) In this clip, the crew presents a mock rap video in Hebrew and English (most resembles: Spanglish). You can see all the features that (secular) Israel likes to celebrate: pretty girls, sarcasm, cynicism, resilience and macho cool. Add to that a layer of conspicuous consumption, and the complete absence of actual Palestinians.

Of course, it's satire, openly mocking official Israel's effort to present the pro-Israeli side of the conflict. It's a sign of what is healthy about Israeli society - a willingness to slaughter sacred calves in public, and laugh about it, even when the laughter comes from a place of deep pain. There is a tremendous amount of information about Israel's military and diplomatic activities, many of which are rightly condemned. It's worth remember that Israel is also surprisingly tolerant of counter cultural messages, even in times of war.

Lesson learned: tolerance of dissent is a hallmark of strong societies. Some of Israel's neighbors could learn a thing or two.

Note: 'Til' is Hebrew for 'rocket.' The song is titled 'Throw a Til on It'
