Jessica Simpson: World's Most Unlikely Vegan?

I have a confession: I used to be a Jessica Simpson fan. Her reality show Newlyweds debuted on MTV when I was in high school, and I loved her self-deprecating sense of humor.

But then Jessica Simpson helped publicize Chicken of the Sea tunafish, and she also became the Pizza Hut spokesperson, advertising their new Buffalo Wing pizza. But I didn't really give up on Jessica Simpson until 2008, when she wore a tee-shirt that read: "Real Girls Eat Meat." This was a tasteless shot at vegetarian Carrie Underwood, the ex-girlfriend of Simpson's then-boyfriend. Simpson has since made PETA's "Worst Dressed" list several times, including in 2010. Simpson also has performed at rodeos and attended the Kentucky Derby in the past.

But now Jessica Simpson is following a vegan diet, and I may be able to call myself a fan once again.

Over the weekend, Jessica Simpson tweeted: "Shocked my system with a vegan diet, special Pu-erh tea from China, and cupping since friday! Who am I right now? This might be too clean!"

Simpson has been toying with a meat-free diet for awhile, as she tweeted on June 16th: "I ate tofu for the first time last night! It was yummy! You know your [sic] from TX when you have to dip it in ketchup. Ha." On June 1st she wrote: "I just might like Earth Balance more than butter thanks to one of my vegan friends."

Back in February, Simpson tweeted: "I'm thinking about getting a pet pig. Does this mean I'll have to give up pork?"

Jessica Simpson also struggled with eating pork while filming her Vh1 show The Price of Beauty. She was asked to choose which pig she wanted to eat one night while in Thailand. "In Texas, you don't go down to the farm and say I want that cow for my burger," Simpson lamented. Then the show cut to commercial.

Jessica Simpson may not be a great mind (the woman became addicted to Nicorette chewing gum, despite never having smoked a cigarette...), but she could be influential to the vegan movement if she sticks with the diet. She has over 2.6 million followers on twitter. Jessica Simpson also has a successful clothing line — that includes leather handbags, shoes, and luggage — and if she veganized her line, she could save many animal lives.

If Jessica Simpson, a former spokesperson for several different types of meat, can go vegan in the very same month that she tried tofu for the first time, anyone can do it. Simpson has finally eaten her words and admitted that real girls eat tofu, after all.
