Kenya Confronts Possibility of Deeper Inquiry by ICC

International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo, who's been pursuing justice in Darfur, has once again requested permission from the court to launch an investigation into political murders carried out after elections last year in Kenya.

President Kibaki and authorities have resisted the ICC largely because the international body's role may challenge not only Kenya's pride in being able to pursue justice on its own, but also may lead to investigations into the potential role of government officials in the killings.

Reuters reports there were about 1,220 people killed, hundreds of documented rape claims, and 350,000 people forced from their homes. To follow the story from Kenya's perspective try Nairobi-based The Daily Nation.
