Know Your Rights: ICE Home Raids Ongoing

I participated in a "Know Your Rights" workshop last weekend sponsored by the local chapter of the New Sanctuary Movement, covered here and here by Philly's Al Día.  Unfortunately, there's still a need for such workshops in the absence of new legislation or noticeable change in enforcement policy.

It's been almost two months now since Obama's inauguration, and we're starting to see the contours of the administration's immigration enforcement policy.  There's not much yet to distinguish it from the last one.

We know that home raids are still continuing as before.  If you think ICE won't come to the door at 5 a.m. just because Obama is in the White House, think again.

So far there's only been one reported major workplace raid, though at 30 arrests, it was on a smaller scale than the Postville-style raids we'd been getting from Chertoff.  And Secretary Napolitano disclaimed knowledge of the raid-which, whatever your perspective on immigration, it's hard to see how that episode did anything but undermine her perceived authority over ICE.

We're still getting word of deaths in detention ... rumors for now, but such rumors in the past have ended up being confirmed once they are reported out.

CHIRLA's "Know Your Rights" video is still a great resource for educating people about their rights in the event of an ICE home or workplace raid or a police stop.

CASA de Maryland's illustrated Know Your Rights sheets are also valuable, in English and Spanish (pdfs).
